Documentaire ‘Wat de grutto ons vertelt’

Bijna overal in West-Europa hebben de trekvogels het moeilijk als gevolg van de intensieve landbouw. De grutto is één van de belangrijkste trekvogels voor Fryslan, maar ook daar vermindert het aantal snel. Om die reden wordt de vogel beschouwd als symbool en boodschapper van het verlies van biodiversiteit op het platteland.
Sytze Pruiksma (muzikant) en Theunis Piersma (bioloog) vertellen het verhaal van de grutto waar zij kunnen. Ze reizen langs de trekroute van de grutto’s, en dus van Nederland naar Afrika en nu, in deze documentaire, naar Spanje en Portugal. Ze tellen er de vogels en maken zenders vast op hun rug zodat ze, ten behoeve van wetenschappelijk onderzoek, gevolgd kunnen worden via een satelliet.
Sytze en Theunis maken deel uit van een organisatie die streeft naar een minder industriële landbouw. De organisatie heet Kening fan ‘e Greide en behoort tot het programma van Culturele Hoofdstad 2018 in Friesland.
In deze documentaire zijn Sytze en Theunis gevolgd naar Spanje en Portugal, waar ze de boodschap van de grutto’s verspreiden.

Documentary: ‘What the godwit is telling us’

Almost everywhere in Western Europe the migration birds have difficult times, under the pressure of the intensive agriculture. The godwits are one of the most important migration birds in the province of Friesland in the north of Holland. Their number decreased fast. This bird is therefore considered as the messenger of impoverishment of the countryside, of the dramatic loss of diversity in Friesland.
Sytze Pruiksma and Theunis Piersma are telling everywhere the story of the godwits. A musician and a biologist.
They travel along the migrations routes of the godwits. To Africa and now Spain and Portugal. They count the birds, and put transmitters on their back and follow them by satellite.
Sytze and Theunis participate also in a civil movement that strives for a less industrial agriculture. That movement is called Kind of The Meadows and is now part of the program of The European capital of Culture in Friesland by 2018.
In this documentary they are followed to Spain and Portugal, where they spread the message of the godwits.
